Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar

Ducks quack, Eagles soar

No one can make you serve customers well. That's because great service is a choice.
My friend Harvey Mackay, tells a wonderful story about a cab driver that proved this
point.

He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing
Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a
white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out
and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey.

He handed my friend a laminated card and said: 'I'm Wally, your driver. While I'm
loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.'
Taken aback, Harvey read the card.
It said:
Wally's Mission Statement:
To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way
possible in a friendly environment.

This blew Harvey away. Especially when he noticed that the inside of the cab
matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Wally said, 'Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a
thermos of regular and one of decaf.'
My friend said jokingly, 'No, I'd prefer a soft drink.'
Wally smiled and said, 'No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet
Coke, water and orange juice.'
Almost stuttering, Harvey said, 'I'll take a Diet Coke.'

Handing him his drink, Wally said, 'If you'd like something to read, I have The Wall
Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today.'

As they were pulling away, Wally handed my friend another laminated card, 'These
are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio.'

And as if that weren't enough, Wally told Harvey that he had the air conditioning on
and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him.

Then he advised Harvey of the best route to his destination for that time of day. He
also let him know that he'd be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights or,
if Harvey preferred, to leave him with his own thoughts.

'Tell me, Wally,' my amazed friend asked the driver, 'have you always served
customers like this?'
Wally smiled into the rear view mirror. 'No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the
last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like
all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth guru, Wayne Dyer,
on the radio one day. He had just written a book called You'll See It When You
Believe It. Dyer said that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day,
you'll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, 'Stop complaining!

Differentiate yourself from your competition.

Don't be a duck. Be an eagle.

Ducks quack and complain.

Eagles soar above the crowd.''

'That hit me right between the eyes,' said Wally. 'Dyer was really talking about me. I
was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become
an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty,
the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make
some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did
more.'

'I take it that has paid off for you,' Harvey said.
'It sure has,' Wally replied. 'My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the
previous year. This year I'll probably quadruple it. You were lucky to get me today. I
don't sit at cabstands anymore. My customers call me for appointments on my cell
phone or leave a message on my answering machine. If I can't pick them up myself, I
get a reliable cabbie friend to do it and I take a piece of the action.'

Wally was phenomenal. He was running a limo service out of a Yellow Cab. I've
probably told that story to more than fifty cab drivers over the years, and only two
took the idea and ran with it.

Whenever I go to their cities, I give them a call. The rest of the drivers quacked like
ducks and told me all the reasons they couldn't do any of what I was suggesting.
Wally the Cab Driver made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like a
duck and start soaring like an eagle. How about us?

A man reaps what he sows. Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper
time we will reap the deserved harvest, if we do not give up!

A cowboy's story

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in the North when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni® suit, Gucci® shoes, RayBan® sunglasses and YSL® tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?"

Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell® notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3® cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on

the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop® and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany .

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot® that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL® database through an ODBC connected Excel® spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry® and, after a few minutes, and receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet® printer, turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says Bud.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then Bud says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?"

"You work for the Government", says Bud.

" Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of Rands worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about how working people make a living - or about cows, for that matter.

This is a herd of sheep.

Now give me back my dog."

Dress Code

To Dress or not to Dress.....Code?

This little detail can make or break the chances of you securing employment. I have learned the hard way not to assume that candidates understand the appropriate dress code for an interview. So I will tell you from experience what our valued clients consider the appropriate dress code.

* If in doubt always over dress and not under.
* Always dress corporate, even if you are applying for chef's position or a waiter and especially if you are applying to represent a company in a sales position.
*Corporate would mean a long sleeved shirt and tie for the men and for ladies a classy suit, pants or knee length skirt and coat.
*Guys--shine your shoes - yes clients notice.
*Keep nails impeccable, short and clean or if long in the case of ladies, then groomed with no chipped nail polish.
*Hair should be short and groomed for the gents. Ladies keep hair polished, washed and appropriately styled, avoid pony tails, save for the gym and make the effort to have a groomed do - unless of course its a perfectly styled swept back elegant pony.
*Make up should be classy and not overly done, keep the blue eye shadows for the Friday night out with the gals and keep it simple and striking.
*Go easy on deodorants but please do wear some, nothing worse than sweaty underarms.
*Interview attire should be classy and simple, elegant and comfortable, ladies wear heels that you 'can' walk in--you dont want to make your entrance praying that you stay upright and balanced.
*Never wear jeans or shorts to an interview. Guys, do not wear earings and ladies remove the nose rings, it may be your personal or religious preference but a corporate organisation may not find it appropriate. So assess the culture of the company in your interview and if you find that they may find this acceptable then great or if your piercings are very important to you, then decisions will have to be made I suppose.
*Dont show too much skin.
*Be sure not save any food particles between your teeth and fresh breath is an absolute winner.
*Never smell of alcohol/cigarettes or chew gum ever in an interview....even the smell of garlic would be more acceptable than this...of course garlic is not smell we're aiming for.
*Be sure that your hands are not sweaty, especially since you will shaking the clients hand before and after.
*Blowing your nose, coughing up a lung and continous clearing of the throat is not very appealing.
*Clean your car, I hear this one quite often. Candidates make a great impression and then the client walks you out to your car and well it looks as though your entire cupboard in on the back seat, including last nights dishes and--- its not easy on the eyes.

So although you may not appreciate all of the points above, the actual point I am trying to convey is that first impressions count. Make your best impression first, you may not get another chance. Clean is appealing, you dont need designer labels, you do need self respect. If you take care of yourself, the client will feel confident that you will take care of his company.

A well attired individual speaks volumes to a prospective employer. It says that you care enough about the opportunity to have taken the time to make an effort, so make the effort and get the job.

I want to help!!!!

I want to help every single candidate that enlists with my agency. That is an absolute fact and I try everyday to find opportunities to help as many as possible.

When we as the agency get the spec (what the client requires in the ideal candidate) we get a list of the inherent job requirements. We either meet those requirements 95-100% or we lose the spec to another agency. This is a very competitive industry and priority is to meet the clients requirements 100% or someone else will.

Often we advertise positions and get a wonderful response, 90% are from candidates that dont have that particular industry experience, so they get filed into our database in the hope that tomorrows specs will see them get assisted.

Time is money and the clients dont want a long handover process, most times when they hire, they dont want to supervise or teach the new employee, they basically want people who understand their business needs and will become a quick return on investment for them.

There are of course clients out there who prefer people from out of their industry, as they maybe feel that industry experience makes one hold onto 'stale/outdated' methods of business, or that will be resistant to learning a different approach to the same industry. These are the clients we can approach with a variety of different cv.s.

What often makes a candidate stand out even without industry experience, is a consistent track record. People that move every year are not looked at favourably in the specialised fields, although they do suit  a certain market..like the IT sector. References are important too, try as best as possible to leave your previous jobs and your managers with fond memories of you! Take the time on your cv to detail your experience/awards/achievements/targets, all these make such a huge difference.

There are candidates that have stayed in contact with me for over a decade and I have eventually found them their ideal job, they have even moved with our agency, so I encourage you to stay in contact with me, I may not be able to help you immediately but I most assuredly will try my best to assist you at some stage.

I want to help everyone, its as simple as that.
So send me your cv:- melinda@hrcorp.co.za

Breakthroughs...(an article to enjoy)

Breakthroughs

I was speaking to Mark Webber recently on his visit back to Queanbeyan, his Australian hometown. I was telling him about my coaching journey, and I asked him about what kept him going, always striving to win a race, the championship and his personal and professional goals. He gave me the following advice that I'd like to share with you.
Imagine you're driving a F1 car at 200 km an hour when suddenly you find yourself sliding out of control and heading for a tyre wall. What do you do?
If you said, "Close my eyes and hope for the best", that's not a really good answer.
Here's what all race car drivers know -- when you lose control, you keep your eyes fixed on where you want to go.
You don't look at where you have been.
You don't even look at where you are.
You focus on where you need to get to.
So what about when your life veers out of control?
The same rule applies. You keep your eyes fixed on where you want to go.
If you have just lost all your money, you don't look back.
If you just lost your job, you don't look back.
If you just left a relationship, you don't look back. You forget about blaming your partner. You forget about blaming yourself.
When times get rough there's one way out. Keep your mind fixed on where you want to go.

What do you think?

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't!
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,
It's almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of mind!

If you think you're outclassed, you are;
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself
Before you'll ever win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the person who thinks he can!

Life will give you back everything you give it

"A son and his father were walking on the mountains.
Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: "Who are you?"
He receives the answer: "Who are you?"
And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!"
The voice answers: "I admire you!"
Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!"
He receives the answer: "Coward!"
He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?"
The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention."
Again the man screams: "You are a champion!"
The voice answers: "You are a champion!"
The boy is surprised, but does not understand.
Then the father explains: "People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE.
It gives you back everything you say or do.
Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.
If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart.
If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence.
This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life;
Life will give you back everything you have given to it."

YOUR LIFE IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. IT'

THE ORANGES

John has been working in a company for 2 years; he is serious, hard-working, responsible and punctual. He is proud because in the 2 years he has received no warnings or reprimands.

One day he looked for the manager to make him a complaint

"Sir, I have been working in this company for 2 years. I like my job and work hard, but I feel I am not valued. Look, Rob started in a position like mine just 6 months ago and he has been promoted to Supervisor"

"Uhmmmmmm, the manager thought and said” I would like your help in solving a problem. I would like to give some fruits to the employees at lunch today. In the market, which is on the corner, they sell fruits. Please, can you ask if they have oranges?"

John tried his best to do this task and 5 minutes later he returned

"ok John, what did you ask?"

"Sir, they have oranges to sell"

"What is the cost?"

"Ahhhhh.... I didn't ask"

"O.k. but did you see if they have enough oranges for everyone?"

"I didn't ask Sir?"

"Is there another fruit we can use instead of oranges?"

"I don't know Sir, but I think...."

"O.k. please sit down for a moment. The manager took the phone and called Rob to his office. When Rob was in front of them, the manager gave him the same instructions as he gave to John and in 10 minutes Rob came back.

"Ok Rob, what news do you have for me?"

"Sir, they have oranges, enough for everyone, but if you prefer they also have banana, papaya, melon and mangoes. The Price of the oranges is R14.00 per kg, the banana is R 5.00 per bunch, mango is R7.00 per kg and melon R3.00 per kg. They told me if we buy 25% more they will give us 8% discount.

"Thank you Rob, but wait a moment please” The manager looked at John who was waiting amazed and said to him "John, what were you talking to me about?”

"Nothing Sir, excuse me" and walked out of the manager's office

It is important to do our jobs, with our best effort, even for the simplest activity; otherwise nobody will give us the most important jobs.

-This blog is for a real hero, who is doing the world good by trying to give all people a chance to succeed- Dale Holdstock i hope everyone appreciates what you are doing for South Africa.

Attitude

by: Charles Swindoll
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitude

There Are no Unimportant Jobs!!!!

All work can be infused with meaning, passion and a dedication to world class service because ultimately the way you manage your job or career is a reflection of your own personal standards and not the company that you work for.

Once again it all comes down to magical ingredient called attitude. It’s the salt in a great dish. You’re the dish---your attitude is what makes you scrumptious. So how would you like your prospective employer to view you? BLAND or SCRUMPTIOUS?

I read this recently and loved it…The Story of the Stonecutters

The first was asked what he was doing. The reply was: "I’m cutting a bunch of rocks." The second responded: "I'm building a wall." The third smiled and said with deep pride: "I'm building a cathedral."

My inspiration today is because I have spent the day opening no less than a hundred cv.s. So you can imagine how I am excitedly looking for those candidates that care enough to tell me enough about their jobs in their job descriptions.

Here’s the scenario:-

CV 1

Tosca Tools - Sales Representative: - 2003 – 2006

* Sold hardware to retail stores

Reason for leaving: - Market in recession/terrible boss, taking him to CCMA-will go into detail in my interview.

Lovely, can’t wait to see this star.

CV 2

Tosca Tools, Edinburgh - Sales Representative: - March 2003 – December 2006

• Marketed company’s hardware range (www.toscatools.com) to commercial/retail and residential sector.

• Cold called to generate appointments and leads

• Set up telephonic appointments to conduct presentations of product range

• Built up client base from 12 clients to 250 clients in a matter of 3 months

• Achieved salesman of the month in January 2004 for exceeding target and closing International account with HR Corporation.

• Built up loyal customer base through retention business and regular maintenance through client visits and telephonic contact.

• Marketed the company’s services via email mailing lists.

• Worked in a team environment planning market strategy and also keeping abreast of competitor activity.

Reason for leaving: - I had an opportunity to develop my career further by joining Magnum UK to market their latest range of high tech automated tools, which I saw had fantastic potential in the market. This move allowed me to grow substantially on a financial basis as well.

References: - Mr. Derek Kathos
Telephone: - 055 768 989
Position: - Managing Director
(I also have previous commission statements if necessary and a written reference)

So here’s your opportunity to be the decision maker. Who would you want to interview to work in your company? Maybe this visual presentation of a human being on paper gives you an idea of how important it is to do yourself justice and take the time to market yourself well enough. It shows that you care enough about yourself and are proud of your achievements and will work for the prospective employer with exactly that kind of integrity when you market his products.

So even though you're applying with an agency, choose to brand yourself well. If you don’t want to be a number in an incredibly competitive market, take the time to plan your CV well and detail your experience. Don’t assume anything and take for granted that a client can sniff that you closed a major account in June 2007 with a company that perhaps he himself has been trying to negotiate to do with business over the past year.

There are high achievers in the market and you have to do whatever it takes to make yourself stand out from the rest. So whether you have been a waitress or a Managing Director, care about yourself and your career enough to take the time to show your prospective employer why ‘YOU’ are worth interviewing.

So go ahead, send me a great cv…Melinda@hrcorp.co.za

Dont wear this to an interview please!!!!!

A BAD ATTITUDE!!!!

Yes a great attitude is the best attire for an interview! Have you been going for endless interviews and just not closing the deal or getting the job?
Are you perhaps feeling dumbfounded? You said the right things right? So what went wrong? Your outfit was a designer label...

Well my insight is the insiders info--I get to hear 'why' you didnt get the job and and I'm here to guide you to closing the deal and getting that job you really desire.

Embracing the right attitude starts way before your interview, not just during the interviewing process. Its having the right product knowledge that allows that positive attitude to shine through. What product knowledge you ask?

You are the product. When you are being interviewed, you are basically asking the client to 'buy' you, your services. You're telling him why he will gain a return on his investment. You're telling him why he just cannot do without your expertise. In order to market yourself effectively, you need to know beyond any doubt where your strengths lie. Where have you gotten the majority of your experience? What major clients have you brought on board for the different companies you have worked for in the past or present? What were your achievements that really stand out? Did you exceed targets, meet them consistently? Do you have a passion for a specific type of service or product that may be related to his company. Are you tenacious in your pursuit for service excellence. Do you do YOUR best in every situation? Do you see that cup half full? Do you enjoy client interaction, is one of your strengths the ability to effectively listen to a clients needs in order to secure retention business. Did you research this company well before you stepped onto their premises? Did you leave him/her with an impression of your leadership style, do you believe in taking your team to the top with you? How have you previously invested yourself and your time in your jobs---do you feel as though you own the companies you work for--thereby taking accountability for your results in stead of blaming outside factors?

OR

Did you spend your interview telling him what an awful boss you have currently. How you really hated all your jobs and all the staff were really mean and obnoxious? Did you tell him that you're not sure what you really want to do in your career, how you'll give it a try and see how it goes? How you have dealt with some really creepy customers and you told them to take a hike? Did you tell him/her how underpaid and overworked you are? Did you make sure to tell him how the glass is half empty? Did you sit through this interview aksing the client to tell you more about his company and why you should want to work for him?Did you leave him with the impression that you are a follower and have very little leadership potential so its best that he holds your hand through this position? Did you tell him how you cant wait to get out of that joke of a company? Oh and this one is good---Did you tell him/her how the recession made sure that you never attained your targets and that things are just so bad Internationally that there is just no hope any more?

If you read both paragraphs carefully enough, its clear as to whom the client will offer the job to---ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING.

A positive confident individual is magentic and draws opportunities with their infectious spirit. They leave everyone wanting more and believing in them enough to give them an opportunity. They humbly express their interest and enthusiasm to work for such a fabulous organisation. They talk with honour and respect about their previous jobs that allowed them the financial opportunity to feed their families and ultimately made them who they are today by allowing them different experiences to grow within their professions. They have no resentment and bitterness - remember that like attracts like--Take the right attitude and you will get the right attitude back.

I encourage you to make your commitment to brilliance. Your first impression counts millions so wow them with your million dollar smile and genuine optimistic attitude that is guaranteed to make you an irresistible investment.

So if you're ready and smiling that gorgeous smile - send me your cv, melinda@hrcorp.co.za and lets make it happen together.

Belief in the vision of your future

Believe in yourself
and your vision of the future.
Surround yourself with
those who believe in you
and will help you achieve
your goals.
Keep your dream alive
despite the challenges
along the way.
There will always be those
who try to steal your dream
by laughter or criticism.
They cannot understand what
drives you to always want more.
In safety, there is no failure —
neither is there success.
Only by taking the risks
that others fear
can you achieve greatness.

Change can be frightening,
but only by changing
can you experience growth.
Only by challenging yourself
to do what seems impossible
can you ever know how much
you can achieve.

There is only one key
to success:
never quit until you win.
It may require a lot of changing,
but you can do it.

The seed of greatness
lies within you.

Nurture it, and there
will be nothing you can’t do..
